Folk On The Rocks and Music NWT present Best Practices for Self-Releasing Music

To help Northern-based artists grow their professional careers, Folk On The Rocks and Music NWT present Best Practices for Self-Releasing Music, a panel discussion featuring industry leaders across Canada.

This free event is intended to help advance the development of the performing arts in the Northwest Territories, and promote and support Northern, circumpolar talent in music, art, and entertainment.

The panelists will include:

Akeem Herbert: Akeem is an Artist Manager and A&R from Toronto. Akeem has had a passion for music and the arts from an early age, playing multiple instruments throughout his childhood. Studying at Recording Arts Canada in their Audio Engineering & Sound Recording program, Akeem was given the opportunity to get firsthand experience on the ins and outs of how to make a great record, and a deep understanding and love for the Music Industry as a whole. As an independent artist manager and A&R, he has worked directly with notable Juno nominated Canadian talents, as well as worked alongside some of the biggest American Hip Hop talents. Having a keen ear for emerging talent and an all or nothing attitude towards his work, has proven to be the driving force to his success.

Menno Versteeg: Menno is a multiple Juno nominated musician and artist that founded the Toronto based label Royal Mountain Records. As head of A&R he is responsible for helping discover acts such as Alvvays, Pup, Gustaf and Orville Peck, and signing critically acclaimed artists like Mac Demarco, U.S. Girls, Wild Pink and Metz. In his spare time he enjoys soup, swimming in ice water, and opening for his friends bands on tour.

Miesha Louie: Miesha is a mixed-Secwépemc artist originally from the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. Best known as the front-woman for Miesha and The Spanks, she has toured relentlessly in Canada and abroad, with chart-topping albums and singles on Earshot, Mediabase Alternative, NACC, CBC Radio 3, and the Indigenous Music Countdown. Miesha has worked with Canadian legend Ian Blurton, as well as Danny Farrant of The Buzzcocks, and has had original music placed in Rutherford Falls, Acting Good, Fakes, + more. Miesha serves Executive Director for BAM! Camp Calgary (Building Allied Music) - formerly known as Girls Rock Camp Calgary, where she also mentored and organized operations for 10 years - where she is focused on expanding programming and opportunities for youth in music. She is proud to be a member of the Indigenous Advisory Committee for Breakout West the last two years.

The panel discussion is free to attend and open to everyone interested in releasing their own music. Please sign up in advance here: https://www.eventbrite.com/signin/?referrer=%2Fmyevent%2F933985916017%2Finvite-and-promote%2F
